Lansing 2008 - (Page 23) :: THE BUSINESS OF CULTURE the lansing region is “on the move” When you visit the Lansing region, you will feel it. There is electricity in the air. It is a feeling throughout the region of great progress being made by the people that live and work here. It is a new and exciting time where the hard work and effort of a combined region has sparked growth, development and investment. From technology to education, investment to job creation, a culture of “cool” to a sense of togetherness and a new cooperative spirit – The Lansing Region is not only the geographic center of the state of Michigan and our Capitol, but the leading force in ensuring its prosperous and vibrant future. The Lansing Regional Chamber is the voice of this combined effort to diversify and enhance regional economic opportunities. We already knew how wonderful some of the new models were with names like Outlook, Enclave and Acadia; but when the Lansing-built, 2008 Cadillac CTS was named the Motor Trend Car of the Year, it confirmed our strong belief that the best built products in the automotive industry are made right here. :: LEARNING TO GROW The Lansing region is proud to provide support for the links between education and economic development with regional partnerships that foster research and development, innovation and training, and most importantly, new career opportunities. While new technology and research facilities have advanced this effort, educational advancements in science and technology are only a portion of this growth. In October 2007, Michigan State University announced that The Wharton Center for Performing Arts would break ground in the spring of 2008 on an $11 million dollar expansion that will ensure the finest performing arts education and entertainment in our region for decades to come. :: 2008 MOTOR TREND CAR OF THE YEAR built in lansing It started with one of the bedrocks of our economy, the automotive industry. While the Lansing Region is known as “The Car Capitol of the World,” many questioned how we would fare with the rise of global competition and outsourcing. With a regional effort and incentives, our partners like GM have not only met the challenge, but adapted, thrived, and created some of the most innovative new products that lead the entire industry. :: STANDING ROOM ONLY IN THE NEW STADIUM DISTRICT The regions urban revitalization is part of the electricity in the air. Old buildings have been converted into new lofts and apartments that become sold out as soon as they are completed. The streets are “Alive after 5” as businesses open their doors to a new customer base of downtown residents, students and visitors. A wave of growth surrounds Oldsmobile Park with the all-new Stadium District. This mixed –use development features new residences, retail offerings, offices and entertainment. The new “Entertainment Express” trolley connects downtown Lansing and East Lansing to expedite the experience between the two greatest economic engines of mid-Michigan – MSU and the State Capitol. Michigan Avenue, the gateway to our State Capitol, has quickly become “Michigan’s Avenue.” w w w. la nsingchamber.org REGIONAL BUSINESS GROWTH p a ge 23 http://www.lansingchamber.org
