West Bend 2008 - (Page 13) west bend area community profile HISTORY & HISTORIC ATTRACTIONS W est Bend gets its name from its location on a westward bend of the Milwaukee River. Before the United States claimed the between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac. The arrival of the railroad in 1873 spurred a period of rapid growth and expansion. The City of West Bend was incorporated in 1885 and quickly became an important center of commerce and industry. Visitors will find several opportunities to learn more about the rich history of the area. At the center of Downtown West Bend stands the Old Courthouse (above), dating back to 1859. This beautiful Romanesque building houses the Old Courthouse Museum, Photo Credit: Stacey Strupp Wisconsin territory in 1833, the area was home to the Potawatomi and Menominee Indians. Settlers were attracted to West Bend by the Milwaukee River and the advantages it afforded industry and farming. Established in 1845, the village became a convenient midway stop The nearby Old Jailhouse Museum (upper left) presents a turn-of-thecentury jailhouse, with authentic furnishings and interesting exhibits. Other area historic attractions include the St. Agnes Convent Historic Site and the Barton Roller Mills historic landmark. In the fall of 2008, the West Bend Company/Regal Ware Historic Museum will open.
