Approximately five miles of the 1,000-mile National Ice Age Trail cross through West Bend’s Ridge Run County Park and the city’s Glacial Blue Hills Recreation Area. West Bend’s newest trail is the Eisenbahn State Trail, offering 25 miles of scenic hiking and bicycling, with 5.5 miles of this trail being paved within the city. Local nature preserves provide abundant bird watching and wildlife viewing opportunities. The 104-acre Lac Lawrann Conservancy has five miles of hiking trails and offers a number of environmental education programs. The Riveredge Nature Center in nearby Newburg consists of 350 acres of natural sanctuary-prairies, forests, ponds and marshes along the Milwaukee River. The rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine State Forest provide thousands of acres of wild lands for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, fishing and camping. Extensive trail systems highlight the Kettle Moraine’s unique topography and geology. West Bend is becoming a popular destination for geocachers. Geocaching is a treasure-hunting game involving Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. Over 300 caches are located throughout the West Bend area providing endless opportunities for outdoor fun for all ages. GPS units can be rented through the City of West Bend Parks Department.
