The department is responsible for conducting public fire safety and education programs, reviewing building and remodeling plans and handling hazardous material incidents. Guiding the growth and development of West Bend is a 2020 comprehensive land use plan. Public transportation needs are served by a shared ride taxi service. West Bend is home to a municipal airport that features two runways, a neighboring National Guard Medical Evacuation Unit, and a flying service that includes jet service. A Municipal Area The West Bend Police Department consists of 75 full-time personnel with 56 sworn police officers and 19 civilian employees. The department is responsible for safeguarding the lives and wellbeing of all persons within the City, protecting life and property and assisting in securing for all persons the equal protection of the law. The police department preserves the public peace, detects and prevents crime, enforces the laws and ordinances of the state and city to apprehend and arrest criminals, preserves order at public places and maintains the safe and orderly flow of traffic on public streets and highways. Serving out of three fire stations located throughout the City, the West Bend Fire Department employs 42 paid and 10 volunteer who are cross-trained as EMT-Intermediates (Enhanced). The EMT-I program enables the department to provide paramedic level advanced life support skills to those in need. The fire department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services to the City of West Bend and to the areas under contract with the City, as well as Advanced Life County. An elected County Board Chair and 30 elected County Board Supervisors represent the people of Washington County. Village and Town government fills out the local form of representation with 5 villages and 13 townships in Washington County. www.wbachamber.org T he City of West Bend functions under a Mayor/Council form of government. Under this form of organization, an eight member, non-partisan Common Council is elected, along with the Mayor, to serve as the legislative branch of government for the City. A full-time professional city administrator oversees the management of daily activities of all offices, except for such authority vested by the Wisconsin Statutes. Network connects all city departments, public library and local educational institutions with a high-speed, broadband fiber network. The key to economic health in the West Bend area is diversity and flexibility. The variety of businesses and industries in the city provide a sound and balanced economic base. Industrial and Office Parks and a Downtown Redevelopment area all created through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) are key ingredients to attracting a compliment of commercial, retail, light and heavy industrial development. Teamwork, and the constant emphasis on quality, keep West Bend a top player in manufacturing and service circles. The community of West Bend serves as a county seat for Washington professionals.
