FROM THE EDITOR PAUL CLOLERY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Catching One’s Breath While Drowning a young reporter at a Texas daily newspaper roughly 150 years ago, I participated in a ﬁre department-sponsored event at a local YMCA. The ﬁre department’s dive and snorkel team ran reporters through drills they used for training exercises. I was a decent swimmer but the snorkeling proved to be a problem. I couldn’t coordinate breathing through my mouth instead of my nose. Some would argue the reason for that was I never stopped talking, but I digress. Water kept going down the breathing tube and it felt like I was going to drown. Investors have been getting that same feeling lately as they look at their retirement accounts. One look at the bottom line and it feels as if your head is being held under water not as clear as the water in the pool. Charitable annuities can be a way out of this mess for some donors while being a problem for charities without sufﬁcient cash reserves. We look at the possibilities for using annuities in our cover story. Getting sued also can give you that inability to take a breath without chest pain. We take a look at what’s happening in directors and ofﬁcers liability insurance in this issue. This is the last issue of Exempt this year.
