Info: www.ncdc.org OCTOBER T he arm waving and running around with an eye to the sky as if the heavens were falling because of Blackbaud’s announced offer to buy online fundraising vendor Kintera have been fairly amusing. The intended marriage of the two brought more relative hoopla than the impending nuptials of Ellen DeGeneres and her girlfriend Portia deRossi. No doubt someone is thumbing through statutes to see in which states such a coupling would be illegal, of Blackbaud/Kintera, not DeGeneres/deRossi. Phrases and words such as “monopoly,” “open approach”and “diminished software options” have all been used by various number of donors continues to decline while the amount given continues to march upward. This trend is not going to continue as a greater percentage of the population declines to give. Charities have themselves to blame. The argument is that the best donor prospect is someone who has always given because the person is philanthropically inclined. That flies in the face of other survey data which shows that the primary reason people give is because they are asked. Yes, continuing to mine the fields for those new donors who will generate $50 or less is expensive. But the long-term, lifetime giving of those new donors will be worth the work. competitors opposed to the Blackbaud and Kintera deal. This is not a defense of the deal. But to suggest a monopoly by Blackbaud is absurd. Perhaps some of these folks should use the accounting components of their software to do the math. When the two firms eventually marry, Blackbaud it will have 24,000 clients of the roughly 2 million organizations in the nonprofit world. Sure, a vast majority of charities are not really a market for most software. Blackbaud projects the “addressable” market to be 360,000 organizations. If you do the math, Blackbaud’s market penetration is 6.66%. Don’t even go there. Many vendors to the sector, just like the charities they serve, spend too much time trying to lure business or donors from others when instead they should be focused on expanding the market. The same can be argued when examining the new Giving USA statistics. The The population is shifting. With the government clamping down on immigration and the kids of Baby Boomers having fewer kids of their own, the bubble is about 10 years away from bursting. It will come back in about 15 years but there is going to be a period where getting $1 more won’t be the goal. The goal will be to retrench and for services to be more focused, which is where donors are going anyway. There’s an old economics theory that the way to survive an economic downturn is to sell your way out of it. In the case of charities, it’s investing in finding people who have not yet been asked to the dance. ••• A note of congratulations to NPT Senior Editor Mark Hrywna who led our NPT 100 coverage for the November 1 issue which took a business reporting award from the Society of Professional Journalists - NJ chapter.
