The NonProfit Times - November 1, 2008 - (Page 4) page THE NONPROFITTIMES 4 11.01.08 Marathon Reader Goes On Display Call him David Blaine with a purpose. While Blaine might be famous for being perched atop or just hanging upside down in New York’s Central Park, David Farrow just curled up with a good (electronic) book. In a Manhattan storefront. For 30 days straight. Farrow set up shop in the 50-square-foot storefront of Datavision, an electronics retailer on 5th Avenue, during National Book Month last month for Sony Electronics’ “Reader Revolution,” aimed at combating the national decline in leisure reading, especially among young people. Ironically, Farrow grew up with dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder before becoming a speed reader. He holds the Guinness World’s Record for memory, memorizing 59 decks of playing cards and recalling them one card at a time over a period of eight hours. It wouldn’t be a PR stunt without product placement. For every page Farrow turns on his Sony Digital Reader, Sony will give an eBook library of 100 classic titles to a U.S. school, with a goal to provide 150,000 eBook libraries, or 15 million eBook classics, to schools and learning institutions nationwide. Passersby were invited to be “relief readers” to give Farrow a break. Consumers can donate eBook libraries to a school of their choice at Sony.com/Reader by completing an online demonstration of the product at Sony.com/Reader. In addition to the eBook libraries, the first 100 schools to begin downloading their eBook classics will receive an education pack of five Sony Reader Digital Books. - MARK HRYWNA Actress ‘Tapes’ Awareness Message Put actress Jessica Alba and bondage together and you might have the next box-office hit -- or maybe just a public service announcement campaign. Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan, national nonprofit voting campaign, wrapped Alba in black duct tape for the “Only You Can Silence Yourself” PSAs.The campaign challenges everyone to vote and aims the message at Americans 18 to 29 who might be voting for the first time in the 2008 elections. “I really don’t see the point in not registering to vote. We sign up for MySpace pages and Facebook pages, and download music off the Internet. The least people can do is register to vote online, actually making a difference in their world, not just making their lives a little bit cooler,” said Alba, who starred in Sin City and The Fantastic Four. Declare Yourself was launched in 2003 by Norman Lear, who produced television shows such as All in the Family. “It makes more sense to spend your time making a change in society -- and it actually doesn’t take that much time. It takes more time to make a music playlist than it does to register to vote,” said Alba, who also sports the Hannibal Lector mask from the movie Silence of the Lambs in one photo. Other stars, like singers Christina Aguilera and Andre 3000, joined in the campaign with their own faux tortured silence shots. Let’s just hope the PSAs have a larger audience than The Love Guru. – MICHELE DONOHUE A Different Kind Of Canvas Some artists use clay, some use paint, and some apparently even use weapons. The Art of Peace Charitable Trust (AOPCT), created by artist Lin Evola-Smidt, is dedicated to “fostering lasting peace” through gathering weapons and melting them to create peace angel monuments. The organization plans to donate its first peace angel monument to the City of New York. The 30- by -32-foot monument will be created from melted weapons collected worldwide with the help of the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), a global movement of organizations against gun violence. The sculpture, expected to be completed by 2012, will be mounted on a base called “The Conversation,” which includes 30 portrait sculptures of people who have done “extreme good” for humanity. EvolaSmidt also created a 13-foot New York Renaissance Peace Angel in the World Trade Center recovery area. - MARK HRYWNA Artist Lin Evola-Smidt works on the wax model for a Peace Angel Satellite Radio Channel Goes Pink Cable television and satellite radio seem to have a channel for everything and everyone.
