A Barrington Discovery
n "A Battle At Barrington: The Men & The Guns" (May 2017, p. 84) author
Stephen Hunter gives his opinion as to which firearm Baby Face Nelson used
to kill Division of Investigation agents Herman Hollis and Samuel Cowley in
the final seconds of the gun battle.
Hunter wrote that the evidence the FBI collected was unsatisfying, and he
concluded that Nelson may have used the Colt Monitor to finish off the two
agents. I have enclosed a copy of an FBI laboratory report that comes to the
conclusion that Nelson used a .351 Winchester Self-Loading rifle and Western
ammunition to end the gun battle and kill the agents.

Life member Christopher graciously furnished us with a copy of a Division of
Investigation Laboratory Report # 3514 dated March 9, 1935. Unfortunately, it
was not among the more than 450 pages supplied to Hunter and his researcher
by the FBI for the novel G-Man or the article Hunter wrote for these pages. The
report was of a ballistics examination by C.A. Appel, in which he compared Peters,
Western and Rem-UMC .351 Winchester Self-Loading cartridges. We reprint it here.
