Shooting Sports USA - April 2018 - 4
This month's cover feature is on the returning M1 Garand rifles that will be available
for purchase from the CMP. The M1 is still popular for competition. Field Editor Art
Merrill explores the M1 Garand as a piece of living history, a connection to World War II
and the men who fought with it. Read his story on page 24.
Introduced in 1980, the Ruger Redhawk was the company's first big bore double
action revolver. Originally chambered for the .44 magnum in barrel lengths of 5.5- and
7.5-inches, it was a robust design intended for long term use with stout magnum loads.
For April's Product Focus, Field Editor Chris Christian reviewed one of the latest from
Ruger, the Redhawk Eight Shooter. Read on page 14.
Descended from the M1 Garand, the M14 rifle utilized multiple improvements that
made it a far superior firearm for combat-and a much better rifle for competition. Our
friend and noted outdoor writer Dick Jones explores the history of the M14 for civilian
competition in his article "The Civilian Version of the M14 Then & Now." Read on page 30.
Do you know who your 2017 NRA State Champion is? Every year, State
Championships are held across the country to determine the best in multiple
disciplines. Our annual listing of State Champions, as provided by NRA State
Championship sponsors, begins on page 36.
Katelyn Abeln is a rising star in international pistol competition. USA Shooting's
Kevin Neuendorf was able to interview the 16-year-old Georgia native to learn her
story. Read on page 42.
Managing Editor, Shooting Sports USA
In our efforts to recruit more reporters, we frequently hear the comment: "But I'm not a
writer." What people overlook is that they are on the scene, hearing and seeing the action
first-hand. Editing and completing the article is our job, so if you'd like to try your hand at
sharing draft reports and photographs from national-level matches or interviews with key
people in the shooting sports, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Here we list companies who display the Shooting Sports USA logo and link on their websites.
