the one hand, a trip to New York
is great for people who love the
theater; on the other hand, it's a recipe for
frustration - so many shows, so little time.
To help make it easier, we've selected five
shows that critics and theatergoers have
singled out as among the best offerings.
The Band's Visit
Ethel Barrymore Theater
243 West 47th Street
Described by Ben Brantley of the New
York Times as "one of the most ravishing

musicals you will ever be seduced by," this
is the story of a one-night stand in a tiny
Israeli town by a touring Egyptian band.
The political and cultural explosions you
might expect never happen; it's all a matter of human beings almost but not quite
understanding each other. As the show has
it, "Nothing is as beautiful as something
you don't expect."
The Book of Mormon
Eugene O'Neill Theater
230 West 49th Street
A story about Mormon missionaries

in Uganda, this show is - be warned
- blasphemous, scurrilous and deeply
foul-mouthed. "Book of Mormon" is also
warm-hearted and hilarious. It's been running for nearly seven years, and for the
whole time it's been making everybody's
"best on Broadway" list.
Bruce Springsteen on Broadway
Walter Kerr Theater
219 West 48th Street
This is the most expensive show in
town. Taking a date to "Springsteen on
Broadway" is cheaper than taking a loved

one to Paris, but it's in that order of magnitude. Is it worth it? The critics say it's a
revelation, comparing it to Lena Horne's
legendary Broadway stand 35 years ago.
If you're of a certain age and affluence,
and you have a rock-and-roll heart, this
could give you bragging rights that will
last for years.
Dear Evan Hansen
Music Box Theater
239 West 45th Street
Social media meets Shakespeare: Evan
Hansen is a tongue-tied teenager who, at
the advice of his therapist, writes himself
pep-talk letters about what a good, deserving person he is beneath the shyness. A
mean kid, Connor, finds him printing out
one of these letters and takes it away from
him. Shortly afterwards, Connor commits
suicide; his parents find the letter, think
their son wrote it and reach out to Evan to
help them understand why their son was so
unhappy. And the plot thickens ...

Hamilton
Richard Rogers Theater

Last year's impossible-to-get ticket
becomes this year's possible-but-still-notcheap ticket. (Cheaper than Bruce Springsteen, though.) "Hamilton" has received
universal raves for being a great, highenergy, totally involving entertainment -
and for bringing onto the Broadway stage
a new crowd of people with a new voice.
By adapting rap to Broadway, this show
gives the American musical a way not just
to survive, but to thrive and transform itself
in years to come.
