STORES Magazine - January 2014 - (Page 8) n PRESIDENT'S PAGE NRF Convention Not the Only 'BIG Show' for Retailers by MATTHEW R. SHAY C lose to 30,000 retailers from around the world will gather in New York this month as NRF puts on the biggest Retail's BIG Show ever. More than 500 vendors will fill an EXPO Hall covering nearly four football fields, and thought leadership will come from retail and business visionaries like Blake Nordstrom of Nordstrom, Ginni Rometty of IBM and Jack Dorsey of Square on topics from reimagining Main Street to global expansion. But while most retailers at the BIG Show will focus on learning new ways to run their businesses, many will have something equally important on their minds - decisions made in Washington that have just as much impact on retailers as those made on Wall Street. That's why NRF has invited a select group of senior congressional staff to the show for the first time. Top advisors to some of the nation's most influential lawmakers will tour exhibits, hear from experts on retail technology and sit down with CEOs. We want to show them retail's role in innovation, careers and community as Washington begins work this year on a wide variety of issues with serious ramifications for retail. With three-plus years of hearings behind us - and distractions like the government shutdown hopefully out of the way - Congress should finally be ready to get serious about rewriting a tax code that hinders U.S. competition in the global economy. NRF wants comprehensive reform that tosses out special interest tax breaks in return for lower rates for all businesses, large and small alike. A competitive tax code is the singlemost-important step toward long-term job creation and economic recovery. Patent reform became a top issue in 2013 as retailers explained how frivolous lawsuits from "patent trolls" cost legitimate businesses $30 billion a year. While the legislation needs work to fully address retailers' concerns, a bill quickly passed the House, and the Senate could send a measure to President Obama early this year. This was supposed to be the month that the employer mandate provision of the Affordable Care Act took effect, driving up payroll costs by billions of dollars and threatening job creation nationwide. Delaying the mandate until 2015 was perhaps our biggest accomplishment of the past year. This year, we will push for fixes to make implementation easier. The Supreme Court's refusal to decide whether New York State's "Amazon" tax is valid is one more reason Congress needs to pass federal legislation allowing states to require online sellers to collect sales tax. Similarly, a federal judge's approval of the flawed class-action settlement over Visa and MasterCard's credit card swipe fees highlights the need for Congress to take action. For a few days in January, Retail's BIG Show will be in New York. But for the rest of the year, another big show will be going on in the nation's capital with debates on these and other issues. NRF will be there to ensure that the voice of retail is heard.
