WORTH WATCHING / CONCEPT2WATCH nergy Kitchen, a fast-casual restaurant chain featuring meals under 500 calories, can claim more than its fair share of satisfied regulars who return two or three times a week. It isn’t just that the meals are low-cal; it’s that they also seduce the palette and are reasonably priced. An average ticket, says co-founder and president Anthony Leone, is just $10.50. Leone developed the concept and opened his first Energy Kitchen in 2003 after becoming frustrated with the lack of healthy restaurant offerings. At his restaurants, a $6.99 sirloin burger is only 487 calories, including the whole wheat bun. Signature sides include black bean and mango salad (224 calories), creamed spinach (120 calories) and corn and edamame salad (156 calories). Other entrees include chicken marinara with low-fat mozzarella (370 calories). “It’s fast food without guilt,” Leone says. Customers can watch their food being prepared in an open kitchen or order customized salads from servers behind a salad bar. Energy Kitchens are typically located on hightraffic streets near residences and offices. The restaurants average 2,000 sq. ft. and seat 40; some have outdoor cafes. Leone and his partners, vice president Randy Schechter and investor Michael Repole, plan to open 12 to 14 franchised units this year and to grow into a nationEnergy Kitchen al chain with 1,000 stores over the New York, N.Y. next 10 years.
