These include a large and highly transient workforce, tracking v a r y i n g schedules to ensure payroll accuracy and administering complex benefits packages. Such was the case for Wilbraham, Mass.-based Friendly’s Ice Cream, which has been serving up sandwiches, entrees and desserts for more than 70 years. In 1999, it was forced to face the fact that updating its mainframe technology to bring it into Y2K compliance and better accommodate its HR and payroll needs would require a major investment. Friendly’s turned to a familiar vendor for help. It already was using general ledger and accounts payable applications from St. Paul, Minn.-based Lawson Software and WWW.STORES.ORG L BY JENNIFER KOROLISHIN Using Lawson’s solutions, Friendly’s: Provides employees with real-time access to data Reduces dependence on the IT department to pull data and run reports Improves accuracy of data Speeds the time needed to process new hires, salary adjustments and other HR changes Reduces check errors Shortens the monthly closing process THE SCOOP believed Lawson’s solutions were better tailored to the needs of multi-unit retailers Friendly’s has 530 company-owned and franchised locations . “We went from a mainframe to Lawson’s client server technology because it made the most sense from a cost/benefit standpoint,” says Kevin Fay, Friendly’s director of systems and technology. “It also provided a flexibility we didn’t h a v e in the mainframe world. That flexibility allows our users to access information more easily, do their own reporting, run their own jobs and have greater control over their work.” Given Friendly’s large number of employees, closely managing HR and payroll functions is the key to keeping things running smoothly.
