The perfect fit for any of your security needs. “The store owners can submit data [for] our database, which we will then review,” says assistant police chief John Trevino, who has been part of a task force working on the project since January 2007. “They will get a certificate of registration which they can display with other permits near the cash register and they will also get a decal-like insignia that includes the Houston Police Department logo.” The convenience store initiative is part of a larger effort to reduce crime in the nation’s fourth-largest city. “When we started drilling down into the statistics, we found that 8 percent of all robberies occurred at convenience stores or [in] convenience store parking lots,” Trevino says. “We wanted to deter and reduce those crimes.” The task force, appointed by Houston mayor Bill White, was headed by Zaf Tahir. The owner of two convenience stores in the city, Tahir says many of the ordinance requirements — such as the drop safe and silent alarms — are within the budgets of most operators. “There are small things you can do,” he says. “It’s not rocket science.” The largest outlays would likely be for the color digital surveillance cameras, and their implementation isn’t required until the end of 2009. Tahir says the ordinance has “this industry on a path to a very safe and secure environment,” but “it’s not going to fix all of the problems. It needs to be coupled with increased presence of law enforcement.” — David P. Schulz Courting Compliance RECENT SURVEY distributed to more than 100 retailers finds that, while more than 85 percent view PCI investments as beneficial to the overall business, only one-third say they have implemented strong compliance and credit card protection practices. The survey, conducted by MegaPath, a Costa Mesa, Calif.-based provider of managed IP data, voice and security services, reveals that managing security and implementing technology updates are two of the biggest challenges retailer respondents face in maintaining PCI compliance. Half consider a firewall to be the most important security technology for ensuring PCI compliance; operating a virtual private network (VPN) and deploying anti-virus software rank second and third, respectively. “Investing in PCI compliance is more than just meeting a standard, it’s about supporting the business,” says Alan Stukalsky, CIO for Churches Chicken, which uses MegaPath’s services for PCI compliance. “Investments we’ve made have paid off with improved operations and productivity.” WWW.LPINFORMATION.COM A Phone: 888.774.3400 Email: sales@bass-security.com www.bass-security.com Visit us in Booth #532 at the NRF Loss Prevention Conference in Orlando, FL http://www.bass-security.com http://www.bass-security.com http://www.bass-security.com http://WWW.LPINFORMATION.COM
