GameStop has been at or near the Hot 100 summit for the last two years, primarily because of its 2005 acquisition of EB Games. Based in Grapevine, Texas, GameStop bills itself as the world’s largest videogame and entertainment software retailer, now operating more than 4,800 stores in the United States and 16 other countries. It sells both new and used videogame software, hardware and accessories for use in games systems manufactured by Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, as well as entertainment software, accessories and other 2 Pure-play e-tailers among the Hot 100 Dress Barn, Dick’s Sporting Goods, TransWorld Entertainment and Talbots are on the growth-via-acquisition team; Coldwater Creek, Cabela’s and Delia are in the rapidly-opening-new-stores group; Zumiez has a foot in both camps. And Einstein and Noah Corp. is franchising locations at a rapid pace. Dress Barn raised its unit count with the purchase of maurices, which operates some 550 stores. Dress Barn CEO David R. Jaffe says integration has been completed and that “maurices provides us with both significant diversification and a second growth vehicle.” The brand appeals to a younger customer than the core Dress Barn stores, with a mix of 90 percent women’s apparel and 10 percent menswear. Dick’s extended its reach by buying niche retailer Golf Galaxy, while TransWorld Entertainment acquired Musicland Holdings early last year and Talbots picked up 200-plus stores when it took over the J.Jill organization. Though the Golden, Colo.-based company owns and operates a majority of its units, most of its year-over-year growth has been via franchising. Office Depot continues to roll out its successful M2 store format, adding 115 domestic stores and 55 interna35 tional units last year, including the acquisition of AsiaEC, a Chinese office supply company. Zumiez is a specialty retailer of action sports-related apparel, footwear and accessories tilted toward activities such as skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, motocross and BMX. The company has been opening its own stores at a rapid pace (42 in 2006 alone) and also acquired the 19-store Fast Forward chain. Most of the Fast Forward units are in Texas and are in the process of being converted to the Zumiez nameplate. The company is looking to open another 50 locations this year as part of its goal of increasing square footage by about 20 percent annually.
