The two leaders in the grouping both shed a lot of stores between the ends of their 2005 and 2006 fiscal years, and both improved profitability in the process. Saks sold off department stores remaining from its Saks Inc. period to The Bon Ton Stores as part of a turnaround effort that has been so successful that Saks also landed on the list of retailers with the hottest earnings. Winn-Dixie’s store closings and sell-offs came during a period of bankruptcy proceedings that brought the Jacksonville, Fla.-based grocer back into the black. Landry’s Restaurants was among those Gulf Coastcentered multi-unit operators forced to deal with some Katrina-impacted locations that weren’t worth re-opening. The company also sold its Joe’s Crab Shack chain last November. RadioShack’s downsizing of store count came with a layoff of associates as former Kmart CEO Julian Day tries to resuscitate the beleaguered chain. Circuit City is another electronics retailer that has fallen on hard times, closing stores in an effort to stanch the flow of red ink. Federated Department Stores sold off a number of redundant locations after acquiring May Department Stores two years ago, including the entire Lord & Taylor group. For the past eight years, Rex stores has been active in several synthetic fuel investments while maintaining a chain of stores selling consumer electronics and appliances. Rex is currently moving into ethanol production, with commitments to a half-dozen different projects, and is shedding stores to free up locations. The effort is ongoing, with the company entering into sale/leaseback agreements with Coventry Real Estate Investments involving 94 current or former store locations.
