StORES Magazine - September 2007 - (Page L7) Industry provided by Downing & Downing all that remains is the unenviable task of determining which is best. Until recently, the time-honored approach was to study the demographics and then “go with your gut.” But retailers will soon have another tool intended to help size-up budgeting, resource allocation, real estate planning and general LP optimization. The National Shrink Database, which debuted in June at NRF’s Annual Loss Prevention Conference and Exhibition, is intended to provide the retail industry with benchmarking statistics on store shrink levels and security usage. Created by LP Innovations of Milford, Mass., and Exton, Pa.-based CAP Index, the National Shrink Database offers users accurate and timely statistics to compare individual retail locations against those in similar retail segments at each mall or shopping center. Reports may be generated on location specific centers through the use of interactive mapping and database searches, allowing members to see shrink results based on segment for the location overall. “If you’re a specialty apparel company and you notice that shrink is far above average at one venue versus another, that’s data that will play a key role in decision-making,” says David Johnston, diWWW.LPINFORMATION.COM rector of business development at LPInnovations. “The venue may still be very desirable; the challenge will then be determining the best defense against shrink.” Johnston stresses that the quality of the National Shrink Database will depend upon retailer participation. “It requires timely and accurate information from the retail community,” he says. “Our expectation is that the retailers who sign on will provide information at least annually.” CAP Index is the developer and custodian of the database, models and analytical results. LP Innovations is sponsoring the project and will provide marketing support and promotion of the database. Foiled by Fog OU MAY RECALL a previous LPinformation report about a security system that envelopes an intruder in a thick, non-toxic fog, rendering him unable to carry out the crime. Now, Mississauga, Ontario-based Arias Tech has introduced FlashFog, a solution that adds a blinding strobe light to the dense fog. The fog reduces the thief’s visibility to virtually nil; the strobe light further disorients the burglar. According to Arias, the Xenon Security Strobe light makes the fog glow 12 times Y Douglas Morris has been promoted to regional LP manager for Bed, Bath & Beyond. . . .
