ThE ProgrAms zONE Supporting Academic excellence A cademic excellence is the core value of the National Society of Black Engineers. As we begin the 2008–09 program year, the National Programs Zone is excited to present important changes to our programs lineup. These changes support greater academic achievement of our members and a showcasing of these achievements for NSBE members, partners and our corporate and government stakeholders. UNDerGrADUAte stUDeNts IN tecHNIcAL reseArcH ProGrAM http://national.nsbe.org/Programs/academicexcellence/ Undergraduateresearch/tabid/117/Default.aspx Student participants who have completed summer research in academia or through internships will have the opportunity to present research in a poster format during the Fall Regional Conferences, thanks to the Undergraduate Research Regional Showcase. The objective of this program, and the Undergraduate Students in Technical Research Program (USTR), is to present the technical research achievements of NSBE undergraduate student members, with the ultimate goal of encouraging African Americans, and other underrepresented undergraduate students seeking STEM-based degrees, to participate in technical research projects that may lead to the pursuit of graduate degrees in technical fields. Research activities at the undergraduate level, including company-sponsored research programs (non-proprietary) and summer research projects all qualify for the USTR competition, which was initiated through a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Research topics should reflect practical applications of engineering technology. The top three students from the national USTR competition will receive full reimbursement of their registration fee for the Annual National Convention and a travel/housing stipend in the amount of $500, in addition to cash awards ranging from $500 to $2,500! 12 • september/october BrIDGING tHe GAP PILot ProGrAM http://national.nsbe.org/Default.aspx?tabid=92 The goal of the Bridging the Gap program is to support individual and chapter academic excellence by having students create programs that increase academic performance of undergraduates, as measured by grade point averages. Students who create programs that increase their overall chapter GPA more than .2 points from the start of the fall semester to the beginning of the spring semester will be eligible to present their program objectives, strategies and implementation model during a competition at the Annual National Convention. The presentations will give other chapters benchmarks to measure their own programs’ success. Participants will be judged on the overall increase in chapter grade point averages, creativity of their program model, oral presentation skills and a question and answer session with judges. All participants will be able to win a relief fund for their chapter’s upcoming academic year and will receive full reimbursement of their convention registration fees. Awards will be: 1st place, $2,500; 2nd place, $1,000; 3rd place, $500. www.nsbe.org 2008 • http://national.nsbe.org/Programs/AcademicExcellence/UndergraduateResearch/tabid/117/Default.aspx http://national.nsbe.org/Default.aspx?tabid=92 http://www.nsbe.org
