sEEK Hits the Mainstream L aunched in 2007 as a pilot program in Washington, D.C., NSBE’s three-week Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Camp stretched to new heights this past July, giving 600 third through seventh graders in D.C. and Columbus, Ohio, the opportunity to engage in, and get very excited about, hands-on engineering design projects. “At this stage of the game, I could not have asked for a better summer of SEEK camps,” says “Brother E.D.,” NSBE Executive Director Carl B. Mack. Mack has championed the program as a way to end underachievement of African-American students in K–12 education and to increase the paltry number of engineers being produced in the U.S. each year. “SEEK is an exceptional program…” adds Ashley Boyd, NSBE’s 2008–09 National Pre-College Initiative chair. “I’m honored to have been placed in a position to ensure that this vision becomes a reality and to have the dedication of numerous stakeholders who will assist NSBE in making SEEK worldwide.” At the forefront of those vital stakeholders is SAE International (the Society of Automotive Engineers), which provided its “A World In Motion” curriculum for the camp and gave training assistance for the 120 NSBE collegiate members from across the U.S. and abroad who guided and counseled the campers as “SEEK mentors.” Columbus City Schools, STEM Columbus, Friendship Public Charter School, General Electric, Caterpillar and Motorola also were prominent partners in SEEK 2008, as was SEEK founding sponsor Battelle. Mack calls Battelle’s manager of Mechanical Engineering, Julie Swick, “an absolute superstar” in supporting the camp this year. Among other things, Swick set up a photo site for SEEK at http://columbusseekcamp2008.shutterfly.com. NSBE National Chair Stevenson A. Dunn Jr., a SEEK mentor last year, attended the camps in both cities and clearly was delighted to add his energy to the activities. Mack was likewise “off the chain,” playing the role of chief motivator, coach and inquisitor of the kids, and joining the Columbus campers as they greeted the nation on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” on July 29. “To hear Robin Roberts, on national TV, talk about what SEEK stands for, what we’re doing and who we are as an organization had to be my most exciting memory of SEEK,” Mack says. ■ www.nsbe.org 30 • september/october 2008 • http://columbusseekcamp2008.shutterfly.com http://www.nsbe.org
