This symposium introduces students to the concepts of the field, the career opportunities and the educational requirements to pursue such a career. Friday, March 27, 4:00 PM–6:00 PM COLL, GSC Networking for Results / Hosted by General Electric Company – The short-term learning objectives of this session are to: provide recommendations on the most effective way to meet people; provide recommendations on the best way to join a group of people; discuss the dos and don’ts of mingling at events such as career fairs, where there are a lot of people you don’t know. The long-term learning objects are to teach workshop participants: how to maintain contact with a new professional acquaintance and how to build and effectively sustain a professional network for job opportunities, project opportunities, collaboration, career mentoring/sponsorship and social support. Thursday, March 26, 1:00 PM–2:15 PM COLL Networking vs. Not Working / Hosted by High Tide Empowerment, LLC – This workshop is designed to acknowledge the advantages of networking while giving participants practical steps of how to expand one’s business network. During the workshop, participants will complete an initial step of networking by creating a personal “30 seconds-to-shine” speech. Participants will walk away with a foundational understanding of networking and how to build advantageous relationships with other business people. Thursday, March 26, 4:30 PM–5:45 PM COLL, GSC Oregon’s Solar Highway & Other Renewable Energy Projects / Hosted by Oregon Department of Transportation – Oregon’s Governor Ted Kulongoski has directed state agencies to secure 100 percent of their electricity from renewable sources, and ODOT has responded with an historic initiative to build the first “solar highway” in Oregon and the nation. With 19,000 lane-miles of right of way and many other properties under its ownership, ODOT lands provide a ready opportunity for development of solar energy, adding value to the public’s transportation system. During this talk, the speaker explains what App Engine is and how it uses BigTable and other Google technologies to make launching and scaling web apps easy. The talk also includes a demo in which the speaker will walk through the process of building and deploying a small web application in minutes.
