March 25–29, 2009 Energizing Creativity to Achieve Exponential Growth Today, Hollingsworth leads more than 1,350 civil servant scientists and engineers and manages a budget of more than $800 million per year. He oversees 60 laboratories located at three sites on the East Coast. Hollingsworth is one of only three senior leaders in the Avionics department throughout all of NAVAIR and the first African-American principal deputy program manager of two multimillion-dollar weapon system programs. Hollingsworth is a fervent promoter of diversity in the work force. He has forged strong relationships with historically black colleges and universities, has established summer internship programs for high school and college students and conducts education forums and open houses for K–12 students. oUTSTaNDING womaN IN TECHNoLoGy SoNya v. STEwarT Vice President, Performance Excellence, IS&GS–Civil, Lockheed Martin Corporation Sonya Stewart is recognized throughout Lockheed Martin Corporation for her expertise and leadership. As vice president for Performance Excellence at Information Systems and Global Services–Civil (IS&GS–Civil), she has responsibility for monitoring performance of all IS&GS–Civil contracts, worth approximately $4 billion in total, and for ensuring they are on a path toward excellence. This requires overseeing the integration of program activities, infrastructure operations and business processes across the division. Before taking her current assignment, Stewart was vice president for Diversity and Equal Opportunity at Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters in Bethesda, Md. During that 20-month assignment, she conceived and executed a highly successful plan to improve enterprise-wide diversity and equal opportunity program strategies and policies. Despite her busy schedule, Stewart finds time to get out into the community and mentor young women engineers and students. She participates in roundtable mentoring discussions with college interns across Lockheed Martin and is a leader of the African American Leadership Forum. She is on the Board of Directors of the Hispanic College Fund and the John Leland Center and is a liaison to the Board of Directors of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). PIoNEEr of THE yEar TyroNE w.a. GraNDISoN, PH.D. Manager, Intelligent Information Systems (IIS), IBM Almaden Research Center In his five years at IBM Corporation, Dr. Tyrone Grandison has proven himself to be a world-class researcher and visionary team leader. Dr. Grandison obtained his B.S. in computer studies and M.S. in computer science from the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in computer science at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, England, in 2003, Dr. Grandison started working for IBM’s Almaden Research Center as a senior systems engineer in the Intelligent Information Systems group. He immediately began to develop innovative solutions for database privacy and security. Since he assumed management, the IIS group has become the premier industrial research organization in data privacy, and its research has made an impact across a broad swath of industries. He and members of the IIS team hold six patents, have two filed and have six more in preparation. Dr. Grandison is also an advocate for increasing the number of African Americans in computer science and is an active recruiter for IBM across the U.S. He mentors new minority employees at IBM, as well as African-American students from Georgia Tech and Florida International University, and is vice president of the Silicon Valley Black Employee Network. LIfETImE aCHIEvEmENT IN aCaDEmIa ISaaC J. CrUmBLy, PH.D. Vice President, Careers and Collaborative Programs and Founder, Cooperative Development Energy Program, Fort Valley State University Dr. Isaac Crumbly is known as an exceptional educator committed to increasing the number of minorities and women in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. From his rural beginnings as a cotton picker, Dr. Crumbly excelled academically and obtained two degrees in horticulture, as well as a Ph.D. in botany from North Dakota State University.
