aE mEmBErS ON ThE MOvE NSBE National Advisor Gary S. May, Ph.D. — NSBE lifetime member No. 3 — has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. May is Steve W. Chaddick chair of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, an institution that is perennially one of the nation’s top producers of black engineers. AAAS awards the distinction of Fellow to individuals whose efforts toward advancing science applications are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Dr. May received the honor for his “distinguished contributions to electrical and computer engineering, particularly for innovative approaches to education and work force diversity.” This year’s Fellows were recognized at the 2009 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago. Jeniene L. Wiseman, at large member of NSBE-AE’s Region IV, has received a Master of Engineering Management degree from Northwestern University. Wiseman decided on her profession in middle school and received her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Memphis in 2003. Soon after, she landed a job at Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Rolling Meadows, Ill., facility, where she now works as an opto-mechanical engineer. Wiseman has demonstrated her passion for helping youth with many acts of service, including serving as an engineering mentor for exceptional high school students in Northrop Grumman’s WORTHY program; speaking to junior high and high school students at NSBE awards banquets and cofounding and talking to the public for an “Engineering at the Mall” outreach program of the Northrop Grumman Women Engineers. Peter Rivera, member of NSBE’s Charlotte, N.C. Alumni Chapter, was promoted in June 2008 and August 2008 at Microsoft Corporation. He now is a program manager running Microsoft’s multimilliondollar Navy and Marine Corps services business. In his current position, Rivera is responsible for managing engagements, services sales, people and critical issues impacting the business. His duties include management of account managers, consultants, premier field engineers and partner relationships. Rivera also received Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ “Extra Mile” award in April 2008 for his volunteer work mentoring minority elementary school students in his community. He is an active member of the Charlotte Chamber and holds degrees in computer science and business administration from the New York Institute of Technology. William Ellis of NSBE’s Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapter has been elected as an advisory neighborhood commissioner for D.C.’s Ward 8. The Advisory Neighborhood Commissions consider a wide range of policies and programs affecting their neighborhoods, including traffic, parking, recreation, street improvements, liquor licenses, zoning, economic development, police protection, sanitation and trash collection, and the District’s annual budget. Ellis first joined NSBE as an undergraduate at The Catholic University of America, where he received his degree in computer engineering in May 2002. He now works as an engineer for Pepco Holdings Inc., an energy delivery company serving about 1.9 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and New Jersey. www.nsbe.org AE member Patricia CoonsWallace, a 15-year employee of IBM Corporation, has taken a new assignment with the company as Americas Systems Availability Leader program manager, responsible for more than 50 accounts in the Americas Geo region — the U.S., Canada and Latin America. Previously, from January to December 2007, she was the IBM systems availability manager for Aetna Insurance Company in Hartford, Ct. She began her career with “Big Blue” as an educational instructional specialist for IBM K–12 Education in Raleigh, N.C. CoonsWallace says her current job allows her to combine her gifts to achieve bottom-line results, through customer insight, technical competence, motivating and inspiring people to perform, and project management. • march/april 2009 • 133
