international neWs Bridge-building in Kenya By Eric Addison largest city. “This latest trip, I got connected with a lady, Wangui, who does a lot of community work there in Nairobi, and we went to a community center in one of the slums in Nairobi called Kiamaiko, also known as Huruma,” Archer relates. “When I heard I was going to the slums, I didn’t really know what to expect…. I was very shocked that it didn’t seem dangerous at all. It was very much like a large community.” With the help of an interpreter who translated his English to Kiswahili, Archer held a bridge-building competition for youngsters in the community center’s NSBE member Akibi Archer found direction by serving young people in Kenya. ‘‘S urprised and excited” is how Akibi Archer describes the children he met at a primary school in Meru, Kenya, during his first visit to East Africa in May 2007. “Most of the people from America they see are white and come there to do charity work. So it is very different for them to see black people from the U.S. there,” Archer explains. “They thought I was from Kenya or somewhere else in Africa. Also, when I told them I was working on my Ph.D., they were shocked at that as well, because of my age. I was 23 at the time.” Archer is now in the second year of the mechanical engineering doctoral program at Georgia Tech. His initial trip to Kenya was with another NSBE member, Renee Sutherland, to visit the family of one of Archer’s friends — one he met when they were both undergrads at the University of Florida. The friend’s mother runs the primary school/orphanage in above: Students at the community center in Nairobi, Kenya, where Archer led a workshop last December Left: Archer with Kenyan community activist Wangui Kimari, at the National Theatre in Nairobi Meru, where Sutherland and Archer spoke to the students at an assembly and interacted with them for a couple of days. That experience — seeing the big, positive impact their presence made on the kids — quickly hooked Archer on the Kenyan people and motivated him to look for ways to serve. His second and latest trip to the area was in December of last year. During this visit he spent most of his time in Nairobi, which is Kenya’s capital and Homework Club. He provided the materials — including Popsicle sticks and glue — while the kids brought a wealth of energy, excitement and competitive spirit to the engineering design workshop, he says. Just as in Meru a year and a half earlier, the young people in Kiamaiko gave Archer a warm send-off, with skits, plays and songs. “I ended up sponsoring a trip to a swimming pool for them,” Continued on page 19 nsbe magazine www.nsbe.org • winter 2009 • 17
