STEM grads Lead in Earning Power By Eric Addison W “The growth (of the job market) for engineers is not as extensive as for, say, computer science, but this is a growth field.” — Ed Koc, National Association of Colleges and Employers hich new college graduates get the highest starting salary offers? According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the answer is clear: science, technology, engineering and math degree holders. The association’s list of “15 Top-Earning Bachelor’s Degrees” includes 11 engineering specialties, computer science, engineering technology, physics, and information sciences and systems. The common denominator of the programs on the list is that math skills are required. “Math is at the crux of who gets paid,” NACE Director of Research Ed Koc told CNNMoney.com in July. “If you have those skills, you are an extremely valuable asset. We don’t generate enough people like that in this country.” “Science and engineering (S&E) careers have been and are good careers; some (S&E) fields more than others,” says Hal Salzman, Ph.D., of the School of Public Policy and Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. Dr. Salzman and B. Lindsay Lowell, Ph.D., of the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, have been tough critics of many popular claims about the strength of the nation’s STEM job market. “I’d suspect that competition will become greater for these jobs both because of the overall downturn and because Wall Street isn’t hiring the top S&E performers at the moment,” Dr. Salzman continues. “But, again, it’s all relative to what other jobs are available. If someone is interested in and has an aptitude for S&E, it could be a great career choice.” “There’s (also) career earnings to consider,” says Dr. Lowell. “Some of these S&E fields have a fairly high rate of attrition as people get older. So unless one learns management or other skills, they may find themselves switching to jobs that don’t pay as well as other fields where seniority brings more long-term rewards.” But Ed Koc of NACE tells NSBE Magazine he expects demand for engineers to grow in the future. “I’m going to wait for the BLS (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) to come out with their December projections before I make any projections,” says Koc. “But based on the current BLS projections through 2016, that would be the case. The growth (of the job market) for engineers is not as extensive as for, say, computer science, but this is a growth field. But more importantly, (engineering is) not a field that is well-supplied. The reality is that the supply of engineers is not keeping pace even with the modest growth of the field.” ■ 15 Top-EARnIng BACHELoR’S DEgREES* MAjoR Petroleum Engineering Chemical Engineering Mining and Mineral Engineering (incl.
