NSBE - Winter 2009/2010 - 36

Maryland’s E-Board Joins the Navy students had an opportunity to take turns on a virtual reality navigation trainer and a submarine dive trainer. Isaac, a computer science major, found this part of his experience to be most rewarding. “The virtual reality trainer was amazing,” said the native of Bowie, Md. “I was impressed with the complexity of the programming necessary to create a training program which is so valuable for developing crucial skills like navigating in a harbor. I can only imagine how many lines of code that would take.” During the tour, the students’ perspectives seemed to change a bit, as they were not only introduced to the equipment that serves as a testament to the value of engineering but also were introduced to the people who operate and maintain that equipment. “I am impressed with the complexity of the overall design of the submarine. It’s interesting to see how well everything on board is integrated to carry out the mission, but each of the individual components has simplicity of design,” explained Ngochi-Nken. The tour included U.S. Navy photoS by MC1(SW/aW) R. DaviD valDez, Navy pUbliC affaiRS SUppoRt eleMeNt, WeSt Distinguished Chapter of the Year By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) R. David Valdez NAVAL BASE POINT LOMA, Calif. — NSBE members had a rare opportunity to see the United States Navy’s submarine force in action, on board the USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) in September. Five Executive Board members of NSBE’s 2008–09 Distinguished Chapter of the Year — University of Maryland, College Park — embarked aboard the San Diego-based, nuclearpowered, fast-attack submarine for a chance to tour the vessel and experience a few hours under way. Before getting on board their first Navy vessel, the students — Chima Ebinama, Joseph Isaac Jr., Melissa Khan, Sidney Ngochi-Nken and Victor Nwaneri — looked at the opportunity as an educational exercise and an opportunity to observe the application of the theories that served as the basis of their courses of study. “I expect to be amazed,” said Nwaneri, a mechanical engineering student from Silver Springs, Md., who will graduate in December 2009. “This experience will demystify a side of life we only see in movies like ‘Crimson Tide’ and ‘The Hunt for Red October.’ ” Khan, also a mechanical engineering major, provided her own insight by explaining that she looked forward to seeing the way people operate the sub — a very complex machine designed to provide a mobile underwater home, surveillance platform and weapon of war. On the first part of the tour at Naval Base Point Loma, the 36 • nsbe magazine Victor Nwaneri peeks out of a torpedo tube as part of his tour aboard the USS Albuquerque (SSN 706), a San Diegobased, nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine. (l–r) Sidney Ngochi-Nken, Chima Ebinama, and Melissa Khan get some experience navigating a submarine, in the dive trainer at Naval Base Point Loma, in San Diego. an opportunity to view living quarters, sonar watch stations, the operational watch center, the torpedo room and the mess decks. The group also took a trip to the topmost portion of the submarine to experience the sights and sounds of an underway submarine after surfacing. “I was amazed,” said Ebinama, a native of Fulton, Md., “not just with the technology but the lifestyle. I was impressed with the food, but I was especially amazed to go outside and see the submarine moving through the water and seeing dolphins.” Khan summed up the group’s experience. “My expectations were met and more. After seeing all the equipment, the way these sailors live, the hardships they endure and the rigorous training they have to go through in order to serve our country, I have an even greater respect for the Navy.” ■ www.nsbe.org • winter 2009
