NSBE - Winter 2009/2010 - 49

36th NSBE ANNuAl CoNvENtioN PrEviEw ToronTo, Canada • MarCh 31– april 4, 2010 ENgiNEEriNg A gloBAl imPACt Technical professionals Conference –tPC Greetings NSBE, i t is my honor and pleasure to serve as your 2010 Technical Professionals Conference Planning chair. I have been involved with NSBE since my freshman year at Concordia University in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. Within NSBE, I have had the opportunity to serve in several positions at the chapter and regional level, as both a collegiate and Alumni member. I have been looking forward to this Annual Convention since Toronto was announced as the location. As a Canadian member of NSBE, I am excited to see this level of commitment to our International membership and proud to welcome NSBE’s largest event to our side of the border. My vision for the 2010 Technical Professionals Conference has three aspects: First is to have record attendance, driven by a strong international Alumni presence. We know that many International members have difficulty obtaining visas to attend conferences in the U.S., and I believe it may be easier for these members to attend a conference in Canada. In addition, the city of Toronto is within driving distance of several major U.S. cities, so I anticipate a large turnout from our American members. Second is to provide interesting and engaging workshops and technical training that address the global nature of our fields of work and our organization, and the challenges and opportunities faced by our members in this global environment. Last, one of my goals is to foster greater AE interaction with other members of this organization and the community of the Greater Toronto Area. As the largest urban community in the country, we have a unique opportunity to reach a significant portion of the black and other minority populations of Canada, an opportunity that we must not waste. This convention and the Technical Professionals Conference will offer the same highcaliber technical content as past conventions, with an international twist. We are becoming increasingly aware of the global nature of today’s workforce, and we must adapt or be left behind. This year’s TPC workshops will focus on Technical Development, Professional Excellence, Personal Success, and Community Achievement. There will also be several corporate roundtables on hot topics in engineering and science, including The Green Movement, Common Ground: Diversity in a Global Workplace, and Weathering the Storm. We will provide numerous opportunities for our Alumni and graduate students to network with industry professionals — at the Career Fair, industry mixers, corporate networking suites, the SIG Showcase and workshops or any of the NSBEpreneur events being held throughout the convention. There will even be the chance to see and learn about new technological innovations at our first-ever NSBE Expo. I look forward to seeing you all in Toronto! Faye D.
