S

pecial Interest Groups (SIGs) are NSBE Alumni Extension signature programs chartered to link NSBE with technology and promote technical excellence among our professional members. NSBE offers six SIGs focused on a variety of industries. The goal of each SIG is to advance the state of science, technology and engineering in communities. Each NSBE SIG is different in structure, and the services the SIGs provide range from presenting technical workshops; to developing scientific products, technology task forces and industry forums; to providing community response to technical issues; to keeping NSBE members up to date on industry trends. As technical professionals and Alumni members of NSBE, it is our responsibility to serve as the voice of the AfricanAmerican community in the technical arena. For more information about how to join or start a SIG, contact NSBE’s national AE Technical Excellence chair, Ronke Adetoba, at techex@nsbe-ae.org.

ENvIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING SPECIAL INTEREST GROuP
Director: Tyrone Hunter Website: http://environmental. havebalance.net E-mail: environmentaldirector@ nsbe-ae.org The programs and projects of the Environmental Engineering Special Interest Group have a goal of achieving and maintaining distributional equity of sustainability and environment-related information and experiences. Previous programs have addressed interdisciplinary sustainability, sustainable transportation regimes, leadership in energy and environmental design and community environmental awareness. Past projects have included an inner-city residential cleanup based in New Orleans, a nature conservatory tour and a bioretention garden case study/building with high school students. Projects being planned include contributing to the campaign to LEED-certify nonprofit organization buildings, developing certifiable education content for online courses and educating audiences in environmental awareness, action and sustainability.
