ae MeMBers ON ThE mOVE nsBe’s national ae operations and special Projects chair, Vice adm. Melvin G. Williams Jr., U.s. navy (ret.), has been appointed associate deputy secretary of energy for the U.s. department of energy. in his new post, reporting directly to the U.s. secretary and deputy secretary of energy, he “drives improvements in mission execution and assures that they are efficiently and effectively implemented throughout the department.” Williams received his bachelor’s degree, with merit, from the U.s. naval academy in 1978. He also earned an M.s. in engineering from Catholic University and attended Harvard’s JfK school of Government, where he studied national and international security. a nuclear-trained submariner, he served in the navy for 32 years and held four command assignments, including commander of the U.s. second fleet. Yolanda Turner-Smith, of nsBe’s fort Wayne, ind. alumni extension Chapter, was named one of the South Bend Tribune’s “forty Under 40” for 2011. The award recognizes business and professional leaders in Michiana who have achieved success in their careers and in their communities before age 40. Turnersmith is principal of the Career academy of south Bend, a publicly funded, tuition-free middle and high school chartered by Ball state University. originally from Chicago, she earned her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of notre dame and her M.B.a. from indiana Wesleyan University. she has served nsBe in several national and regional leadership positions, most recently as the 2007–09 nsBe–ae national Publications chair. nsBe–ae member Patricia A. Edmonds was recently promoted to Gs-13 and selected as the H-60 Training systems lead test engineer at the naval air Warfare Center Training systems division (naWCTsd) in orlando, fla. she was also recognized as a “Plank owner” for the stand-up of the 5.0 Test and evaluation competency at naWCTsd. edmonds earned a bachelor’s degree in systems and information engineering from the University of Virginia and a master’s in systems engineering at The Johns Hopkins University. a member of the nsBe family since high school, she has served the society in many leadership positions, including her current position as the nsBe national ae Publications chair. during her freshman year at UVa, in 2001, edmonds was issued a U.s. patent for an “apparatus and Method for distinguishing Paper articles from Plastic articles.” Travelius Harris, of nsBe’s Pittsburgh, Pa. alumni Chapter, was recently featured as one of the “faces of the region” on the website imaginePittsburgh.com. Harris works as a field service engineer for Westinghouse, servicing reactor coolant pumps in nuclear power plants. now stationed at the Watts Bar nuclear Plant in spring City, Tenn., he spent three years in Pittsburgh and served as secretary then vice president then president of the nsBe–ae chapter there. during his term as president, he led the chapter’s expansion from only four active members to more than 20. He also drove the group’s involvement in community activities to promote engineering careers, especially among youth.
