HOwArd Jr., pH.d., cOnFerence cHAirMAn And FOunder h Aerospace systems conference attendees tour the Boeing satellite development center in 2010. istory was made in February 2010, when the NSBE Space Special Interest Group (SIG) and the former NSBE Aerospace SIG joined forces to produce the NSBE Aerospace Systems Conference (NSBE–ASC). This biannual conference was the first, and so far the only, technical conference to target and feature black aerospace professionals. More than 250 black aerospace professionals from industry, academia and government convened in Los Angeles, Calif., for this inaugural event. Sixty-one technical papers were presented at the conference, with 55 of them recorded in our published conference proceedings. Attendees were honored at the closing event by the appearance of five African-American Star Trek actors representing each of the five Star Trek series, who presented our highest-achieving attendees with Celestial Torch Awards. The 2012 NSBE Aerospace Systems Conference will be held Feb. 1–4, back in Los Angeles. NSBE–ASC is one of NSBE's most technical conferences, delving deeply into both aeronautical and astronautical sciences. The conference theme, “The Sky Is Not the Limit; It’s Where We Begin,” directly challenges the saying, “the sky is the limit” and holds a dual meaning. NO LImITS We say we are not limited by the boundaries of the sky, that in fact, those boundaries are where we begin.
