The benefit of being more than just a resume is accompanied by the fear of how a future employer might perceive that additional information. A storm of controversy has been generated by some organizations’ practice of requesting Facebook passwords from potential employees before extending a job offer to them. This “social media screening,” in which employers peruse job candidates’ online content, has caused many people to view an organization’s presence on social media sites as an invasion of their personal privacy. Nonetheless, the benefits of these sites as sources of information for prospective employees and as avenues to connect individuals within organizations should not be overlooked. In a society that thrives on cyber communication, several important questions can arise as to the impact the virtual community has on the perceptions people hold of big companies. www.nsbe.org How important do social media apps for smartphones become in job seekers’ preference for communication-focused companies such as Apple and RIM? These groups are often referred to as employee resource groups (ERGs), employee network groups, or affinity groups. For example, organizations may have a black employees network, a gay/lesbian alliance, etc. It probably isn’t surprising that 75 percent of NSBE members plan to join such an employee group if their employer offers one. NSBE members were particularly interested in the social support offered by employee resource groups. The other benefits, such as leadership opportunities, better community ties, and improving orientation to the organization were also key factors in wanting to join an ERG. Ironically, the biggest concern about joining one of these groups was the potential for social isolation from other employees. There was also a concern that joining an ERG might lead to being labeled a “troublemaker.” One note of interest: those who didn’t plan to join an ERG were most skeptical about the potential exposure to senior management that those who planned to join expected. Overall, NSBE members believed that the benefits of joining an ERG far outweighed the potential drawbacks. ‘nsbe 50’ 2012 In addition to providing their opinions in the survey about a variety of recruiting practices, NSBE members, during the registration process, also selected the companies for whom they CoNTINUEd oN PaGE 33 nsbe magazine • fall 2012 • 31 http://www.nsbe.org
