On behalf of the National Society of Black Engineers’ National Executive Board and Convention Planning Committee, I invite you to join us for NSBE’s 39th Annual Convention, which will be held on March 27–31, 2013 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The Convention Planning Committee is expecting nearly 10,000 collegiate, precollegiate and technical professional attendees and is working diligently to give each one a memorable experience. The 39th Annual Convention will be a life-changing event for many. As we return to the birth state of NSBE, convention attendees will have opportunities to develop themselves. And they will also have the chance to revisit all of the things that have made NSBE special to hundreds of thousands, since “the Chicago Six” founded the Society at Purdue University, in 1975. In starting another chapter in our organization’s rich history, the planning committee is going back to the basics and revamping the convention, to ensure that each attendee has an opportunity to “Honor Our Past and Drive Our Community Forward.” The convention agenda is being simplified to allow members to gain more from their attendance and increase their positive impact, not only on their fellow members but on our host city of Indianapolis, as well. We have some exciting new events planned for this year’s convention, all of which are focused on the development of our attendees. The NSBE Expo has been revamped and expanded. It will now be the premier venue for our members, corporate supporters and friends to showcase their contributions to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. There will be poster sessions, onstage presentations, technology displays and much more. We are also adding a health and fitness component to the convention, which will include a Technical OutReach Community Help (T.O.R.C.H.) community luncheon, daily fitness activities and a 5K Walk for Education. The menus at our various events will also reflect healthier choices. NSBE Annual Convention By Whitney B. Gaskins, NsBe 2012–13 National Convention Planning Committee Chair Do not fret. Although we are incorporating new activities, our signature events will still occur. The two-day Career Fair, networking events and Hospitality Suites will be back, meaning that our convention will remain the premier venue to find technical jobs and minority technical talent. An overhauled Graduate School Conference is being introduced, with the help of the National GEM Consortium. The Technical Professionals Conference kicks off on Thursday, March 28 with a luncheon, and the Pre-College Initiative Conference is scheduled to be the most interactive to date. The last time NSBE held its convention in Indianapolis, in 2001, we brought in celebrity talent such as Vivica A. Fox, Tavis Smiley, Tony Brown and Kweisi Mfume, among others. This year, we are bringing in even more special guests to engage our members. But, if you want to find out who they are or anything else about this NSBE homecoming, you must be connected with the planning committee through the convention website, at convention.nsbe.org, and through our social media outlets. I encourage you to follow the convention on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention our new reality show, The NSBE World: Indianapolis, where you can see behind-the-scenes planning and get a preview of the exciting events on the convention agenda.
