EASY NETWORKING TIPS TO STAND OUT IN A CROWD By Martina Efeyini A re you a recent graduate seeking your first job after college? If the answer is "Yes," or even not, you need to network! Stumped about where to find networking events? Check out professional organizations, alumni associations or community social groups. All it takes is one click to subscribe to an event listserv. So grab some business cards, get dressed, and network. But before you leave, here are a few tips on how to stand out in a crowd while networking: 1. Have a Game Plan: This means do your research for the networking event. Read about the new trends or projects going on in your field. This information is a good conversation starter and shows that you understand the industry. 2. Set Goals: Think about what you want to accomplish. Whom do you want to meet? What career opportunities are you looking for? Once you've answered these questions, set a goal to meet at least four new people. If you are a shy person, bring a colleague with you for emotional support. 3. 4. Listen: Always listen, and remember names. Ask questions: "How did you get into...?" or "Did you read that paper about...?" These are questions that will show your conversation partner that you are knowledgeable about your industry and are interested in what he or she has to say. 5. Enjoy, and Follow-up: Remember, just because you are networking does not mean you cannot enjoy yourself. Make sure you are courteous, and when the event is over, follow-up with the people you meet. You never know where this will lead you. Be Memorable: Think about your attire. You can still be professional and show personality by wearing a brooch, scarf or tie. People will notice you, and this can be another conversation starter. Most important, be genuine, and people will remember you. MANAGING SOCIAL MEDIA By Martina Efeyini N ew tweet. Facebook post. LinkedIn notification. New blog post. Social media is everywhere and impacts our lives daily. Whether you use it - or plan to use it - in your personal life, for your business or both, it can sometimes seem a little overwhelming. Here are some quick and easy tips to manage social media: Define your goals: Are you using social media to enhance your personal life, grow your business or both? Do you want to keep up with news and trends in your field? Are you looking for a creative outlet? If you have multiple, unrelated goals, I suggest creating separate social media profiles for each. You can easily manage the profiles individually and achieve your goal for each. 2. Examine your existing online presence: An easy way to check your online reputation is to "Google" yourself. Look for pictures, posts and tags. If you find something that does not represent you in a positive way, contact the site administrator to remove it from the site. You want your online presence to showcase the best "you" possible. 30 * NSBE MAGAZINE * C ONVENTION 2014 3. Decide what social media site(s) to join: Do you want quick updates at your fingertips? Twitter may be for you. If you want to connect with friends and family, I suggest Facebook for personal use and LinkedIn for professional use. Or are you interested in writing? If so, consider starting a blog or following blogs. 4. 1. Remember, always remain professional! No matter what site(s) you decide to join, it is important to remain professional. Think of your online profile as an online resume or portfolio. You want your profile to represent you well. www.nsbe.org http://careers.nsbe.org http://www.nsbe.org
