His lifelong interest in brain function led him to create the nonprofit Redwood Neuroscience Institute (RNI), a scientific institute focused on understanding how the human neocortex processes information. While at RNI, Hawkins developed a theory of neocortex that appeared in his 2002 book, On Intelligence. In 2005, Hawkins co-founded Numenta to develop a technology platform derived from this theory. Hawkins earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1979 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2003. What factors affect — or even determine — how we see the world? How can we improve the quality of our own prisms, so that they show us what we need to see without distortion? Malcolm Gladwell has probed these questions from different perspectives in his best-selling books. Blink looks at the psychology of human interaction, while The Tipping Point looks at the sociology of trends and change. This presentation draws on the research Gladwell did for these books and on new material to explore the roles of social dynamics and shared worldview, personal expectations and even brain science in shaping the lenses through which we approach our experience. thursday, april 10 2:00 p.m. – 2:35 p.m. friday, april 11 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Gene Hodges Chief Executive Officer | Websense, Inc.
