Manchester’s Econo Labour Party Conference - Special Feature Manchester is the economic engine of the North West with a concentration of knowledge and entrepreneuralism un-paralled in northern England. Over the last decade or so, the city has undergone a spectacular renaissance of which Mancunians are rightly proud. This growth, both in economic and population terms, has not come about by chance but through a clear vision of where the city is going - and needs to go. Our vision, shared by the City Council and key partners including Greater Manchester Police, the area's NHS Trusts, and in the private sector is unashamedly ambitious. By 2015 we want Manchester to be a world-class city with a larger, happier, healthier and wealthier population which contributes to - and benefits from - the city's wealth. One way we hope to achieve this is by radical improvements to Greater Manchester's public transport system delivered through the Transport Innovation Fund. If approved, the TIF package will see a £3 billion package of public transport improvements introduced along with the introduction of a limited weekday, peaktime only congestion charge. This would benefit every household by tackling congestion as well as delivering more trams, more trains and new and improved bus services. Drivers who want to leave their cars at home will have viable alternatives and new transport interchanges and a travel smartcard (like London's Oyster card) will make journeys smoother and more convenient. Regeneration is improving lives and opportunities in every part of the city.
