One of the University of Salford’s most successful ways of working with industry is through the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) scheme. Originally launched as the Teaching Company Scheme in 1975, KTPs have evolved into one of the leading initiatives for engaging academic experts with innovating businesses. Projects can be undertaken in a wide range of areas including: product design, manufacturing, technical innovation and business processes (including IT and social sciences). Through KTP, companies we have worked with have shown significant benefits. Given the rich variety of projects, business performance outputs vary considerably from case to case. The latest information shows that, on average, the business benefits that can be expected from a single KTP project are: • Up to 67% Government funding; • An increase of over £220,000 in annual profits before tax; • The creation of three genuine new jobs; • An increase in the skills of existing staff; • Increased turnover and profitability; • Access to new markets; • Development of new products; • Improvement in existing product design; • Ability to recruit and develop talented graduate staff; • Improvement in quality, productivity and customer satisfaction. Established in 1996 the Hilly Clothing brand, specialise in the design and manufacture of functional running accessories. Unique to the business is its reputation for providing innovative, technical, performance products (many UK manufactured) of good quality coupled with its excellent customer service. The KTP which started in April 2006 will enable Hilly to design and develop a new range of apparel having technical functionality. Managing Director, Graham Richards, reported “from the outset the potential benefits of the KTP looked very favourable to the development and growth of our business. The professional approach prior to approval and since the start of the programme has also been very refreshing and beneficial. We are now well into the second year of the project and the company has benefited significantly in many ways, including: new product development and in turn, sales. In addition the interaction with Salford University has enabled us to tap into additional expertise and knowledge which has helped the development of the brand”. The University of Salford has 30 years’ experience and involvement in the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships scheme, supporting companies and organisations in their strategic development. We aim to assist many more. Could yours be one of them?
