MP HazeL Blears NXT contributor Gavin Stark talks to Hazel Blears about Manchester as a world class city for business, development and life. Q) What do you envisage for Manchester as world class city of the future in line with London and other major European cities and what do you think government need to do to make this happen? A) I see Manchester as a growing centre for finance, business, culture and leisure. I think the transformation we've seen over the past ten years is just the start. Manchester should be thinking, not only in terms of competition with London or Birmingham, but also with New York, Berlin and Barcelona. That's what being a world-class city is all about: vision and pride. When the Labour Party held its conference in Manchester in 2006, people visited who had never been before. Their reactions were highly enjoyable. I think some of the London-based media were expecting smoke stacks and flat caps. I gather the conference centre order book was bursting afterwards. The Government is helping to build on Manchester's successes, with support for new businesses and opportunities, to unlock the talents of everyone in Manchester. For me, it's not just about the iconic landmarks, but also about developing the talents and potential of everyone. Q) With regards to the economic decline what affect do you think this will have on the development of the city centre property and how does it fit within your 'quality housing' agenda?
