NYLON - January 2008 - (Page 58) 1 2 3 Tim Burton is the master of creepy-cute: His characters mean well, but are often misunderstood—because they’re dead, because they have blades for fingers, and so forth— and the inhabitants of Halloween Town were no different. Steeped, though cheerily so, in the frights of All Hallow’s Eve, the residents admire nothing more than the ability to induce screams, shrieks, and nightmares. When Jack, the community’s leader and “Pumpkin King,” stumbles upon the merriness of Christmas, his attempts to bring some holiday cheer back to Halloween Town go ghoulishly wrong. Then, it’s up to Sally, a patched-together rag doll who’s secretly in love with Jack, to save Christmas from being cancelled. In the end, all is merry and bright. Take a cue from Jack and Sally’s ghostly style this season, and deck yourself in lots of black, skinny pants, Victorian-era ruffles, and tuxedo jackets. Maybe then, someone will be prompted to say to you: “For it is plain, as anyone can see.
