NYLON - January 2008 - (Page 60) jeans of the month blues train FOR MATIX WHITE LABEL, THE BEAT GOES ON. PHOTOGRAPHED BY JAY HARRISON jeans by matix white label, shirt and t-shirt by pleasure principle, shoes by agnés b. stylist: naima difranco at igroup, nyc. hair and makeup: hong hyun jeong. model: luana at marilyn. Jeans and rock ’n’ roll go together like, well, all the best clichés. That’s why Matix’s new White Label jeans—sonamed because the fibers are derived from the white oak plant—are such a well-calibrated specimen. The unfussy, straight-leg style is cut from aged denim in a dark wash, pronounced stitching, and hems that can be tucked, or rolled-up, into a pair of rocker boots. “Music has always gotten me through the good and bad of my life,” says the label’s designer, Tanya Carrao, who, at just 24-yearsold, is applying her talents to the line’s blue-jean basics, plus pleat-front shorts, lightweight outerwear, and day dresses, accentuated with details like mesh-covered panels, sporty drawstrings, and wood buttons. “I’m a huge people watcher,” confesses Carrao. “One thing that motivates me as a designer is the way two people can wear the same thing and have two completely different frames of mind.” JENNY FELDMAN
