NYLON - January 2009 - (Page 114) dangerous beauties FALLING FOR THESE FEMMES COULD PROVE FATAL. DREW BARRYMORE IN POISON IVY Poison Ivy (1992) was actually an image overhaul for Drew Barrymore. The young actress had been on a slippery slope after she won audiences’ hearts as little sister Gertie in E.T., and a girl who divorces her parents in Irreconcilable Differences, which netted her a Golden Globe nomination. If you read Barrymore’s autobiography, Little Girl Lost, you know she spent her tween years experimenting with drugs and alcohol, and in and out of rehab. So, while accepting the role of a sexed-up Lolita character would be a risk for most teenage actresses, in Barrymore’s case, it was a welcome change from the 24-hour party lifestyle she had been leading (the change being, um, employment). And though Poison Ivy may have been a flop at the box office, it was a hit at Sundance and has since become a cult classic, spawning three equally titillating sequels; sorry, Alyssa Milano, but no one plays this part quite like Barrymore. In the film, Ivy, the mysterious girl from the proverbial wrong side of the tracks, befriends Sylvie (Sara Gilbert), a wealthy loner with an obvious crush on her. Soon enough, the emotionally manipulative teen brainwashes Sylvie’s mom, Georgie (Cheryl Ladd), and starts a sordid affair with her dad, Darryl (Tom Skerritt). Their first sexual encounter happens as his wife is sleeping nearby, and there is a memorable scene involving the hood of a car and pouring rain. Though watching this May-December romance bloom may be pretty gross, thankfully Ivy is easy on the eyes. With her long blonde curls, scarlet lips, alabaster skin, and a large tattoo of a gothic cross on her upper thigh, it’s obvious why Darryl gets ensnared. As the tagline for the movie promised: “What Ivy wants, Ivy gets.” BEAUTY BENEFITS BEYOND AMPLIFYING WATERPROOF MASCARA IN BLACK Because who wants their mascara to run when they’re doing it in the rain? $5.99, AT WNWBEAUTYBENEFITS.COM.
