NYLON - January 2009 - (Page 70) all that glitters PHOTOGRAPHED BY ROBIN JONSSON “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire/ Jack Frost nipping at your nose/ Yuletide carols being sung by a choir.” There’s nothing like the sweet sound of Nat King Cole singing this holiday classic to put me in a festive mood. The smell of fresh pine, lights adorning the exterior of every suburban house, and over-indulging in eating, drinking, and spending are what this time of year is all about. And when it comes to dressing up for the many seasonal shindigs, I, as well as many of my peers, usually sport a garment adorned with glorious sequins. They are festive, shiny, bright, and perfect for the most wonderful time of the year. They can transform a boring pair of pants into a pair of fabulous “look at me” trousers or a plain old sweater into a Bob Mackie-esque top. Available in a wide variety of colors and geometric shapes, sequins are one of the reasons why I look forward to holiday parties. When else can I wear head-to-toe sparkles for 21 days straight and not be called a delusional disco queen? Designers like Proenza Schouler have been using the theatrical embellishments to jazz up their pieces. For Fall ’08 the dynamic duo showed beautifully layered cocktail dresses covered in black, bronze, and navy sequins. Even Victoria’s Secret Pink decorated tight, black leggings and a short, red skirt in the shiny things. As the holiday season winds down, I become very nostalgic and wonder why people store their sequined clothing away for the following year instead of wearing them whenever. And then I say to myself, “Sequins don’t have to be restricted to the holiday season.” They can not only be worn to a Liberace-themed soiree, but to any party on any given day, or even grocery shopping. So, one of my New Year’s Resolutions is: to liberate sequins and wear them whenever I feel like it.
