NYLON - February 2008 - (Page 28) behind the scenes UNDER COVER: THE KILLS Jamie Hince and Allison Mosshart of the Kills don’t usually like stylists. Which makes sense when you meet them––people with personal style this on point (their favorite designers include Hysteric Glamour, Luella, and McQueen) don’t often relish others dressing them. The pair showed up for our cover shoot at New York’s Pier 59 Studio (the second half of the story was shot in London at the Athenaeum Hotel) wearing matching skintight jeans. Stylists Kemal and Karla stuck to a palette of monochramatic black for the lean-legged pair, who loved everything (Jamie was especially enamored with an A.P.C. pea coat, and Allison adored an Hermès studded watch)––except for the nonpants options. Allison’s response to a zippered Chloé mini? “No skirts or dresses. Not now, not ever.” Fine with us––when you look this good in trousers, who needs to show leg? Photographer Marvin Scott Jarrett culled ideas for the shoot from David Bailey’s Swinging ’60s-era images of rock legends like the Beatles and the Stones. But though the inspiration may have been retro, the result, and the music played throughout the day (Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the new Depeche Mode), was definitely modern. BEAUTY NOTE: If Snow White was a rock star (and a real person for that matter), she might look a bit like Allison from the Kills: alabaster skin, hair the color of a shiny onyx stone, and cheekbones that could cut ice. Besides rimming her eyes with soft charcoal, and layering on mascara, her face was left pretty bare. FOR HER LOOK TRY: Renew and Lift Foundation in Ivory, Smokin! Kohl Shadow in Black, Volume Flash Mousse Mascara in Extreme Black, Blush in Pink Rose, and Über Full Plumping Balm in Big Time. All, Rimmel. still lifes: jonathon kambouris. photo: stephen walker.
