NYLON - February 2008 - (Page 42) An abandoned Victorian warehouse may sound like a cold, spooky space, but for Chloe Lonsdale, it was the perfect place in which to conjure back the Made in Heaven denim brand Originally established in 1969 by Lonsdale’s godfather, MiH quickly developed a cult following and was the first-ever British stretch jean for both men and women. Made famous by Lonsdale’s father Tony, who was known as the “Blue Jean King,” the leg-lengthening, buttenhancing styles were sold in his Jean Machine store and seen on everyone from Farrah Fawcett to Jane Birkin. Now, after an absence of more than two decades, Made in Heaven is back. “I grew up with the most inspirational parents,” says Lonsdale, a Central Saint Martins graduate and former Nicole Farhi designer. “I knew I wanted to start my own business, but truthfully, I never envisaged it being in jeans!” Using the original archive patterns and cutting blocks, Lonsdale is keen to maintain the essence of the brand without getting caught up with denim trends. “We don’t need to wash them with different vintage effects,” she says. The flattering cuts, fuss-free stitching, and limited-edition runs such as this season’s patchwork are fast giving denim fans a wake-up call.
