NYLON - February 2008 - (Page 87) international color Ever since we went to London for this issue, I’ve been lamenting over all the ways in which I think the U.K. is infinitely superior to the U.S. My two biggest beefs are that they have universal healthcare, we don’t, and that they have a popular radio station (Radio 1) that actually plays good music, and we don’t. They also have a surplus of beauty brands that are progressively fashioned and environmentally based––but fortunately, we can get our hands on those. Here, a few of our favorites that we plucked from Britian’s cornucopia of green beauty. KATE WILLIAMS Nick & Milly is a certified organic and vegan bath and body line from a carbon neutral company. nickandmilly.co.uk Louise Galvin Sacred Locks is a sulfateand paraben-free line of shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments. louisegalvin.com Balm Balm’s Rose Geranium Face Balm won the Organic Industry Award for best new Beauty Product, and the 100% organic line also includes lip balms and fragrance-free products. balmbalm.com Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare is formulated on the Isle of Wight and the company’s employees blog about the harvest of their organic ingredients. lizearle.com This Works, as its name might suggest, is skincare oriented towards visible results and formulated with natural essential oils. thisworks.com Face Boutique, with colorful packaging and paraben- and sulfate-free products geared toward young skin, looks as good as it feels. faceboutique.com Ren Skincare produces clean bio active skincare products that have, in recent years, developed a cult following. renskincare.com Neal’s Yard, the classic British natural brand with the apothecary-style packaging just celebrated its 25th birthday. nealsyardremedies.com NEW ATTITUDE There aren’t many men who can simultaneously exude utter confidence, irreverence, and modesty––but hey––super-stylist James Brown ain’t your average Joe. He might have honed his art in the über-effete world of hair, but there’s still a scrappy South London kid in his demeanour. Growing up down the street from Kate Moss, the crazy journey started for them both in 1993 with that famous Corinne Day Vogue cover of a bare-and-baby-faced Kate with scraped-back hair (courtesy of a 22-year-old Brown), and continues, today, with his oldest-bestest-mate playing muse to his new product line, James Brown London. His past clients might read like a Hollywood guest list (Demi, Anne Hathaway, Bowie, Diane Kruger, Juliette Lewis, Sofia Coppola, Gwyneth), but there’s no gimmickry in the range. “I feel I can be honest about the kind of products you need as opposed to someone in marketing deciding what products they want to sell. I won’t ever use more than two styling products––three max––and I think it’s good that more people are told that, rather than being encouraged to buy extra products for the sake of it,” he says with a smile. “Kate too, embodies what I wanted my new haircare line to be about––I didn’t want the hair looking perfect; my approach is as much about an attitude and that is exactly what Kate is all about.” So while most of us may not have her swagger or style, we can at least manage to execute her bluebell-scented brand of bed-head. Yes, James Brown, I got you and I feel good. EMINE ALI jamesbrownlondon.com still lifes: jonathon kambouris. elizabeth I: retna. marianne faithfull: terry o’neill/ retna.
