NYLON - February 2009 - (Page 58) private icon: single digits THE UNMISTAKEN BELLWETHERS of grunge fashion—flannel shirts, black tights, ripped jeans, Doc Martens—were the visual foundations for Cameron Crowe’s paean to all things Seattle in Singles (1992) Fickle hearts (1992). flutter and ridiculous bands persevere (check out cameos from a then-goofy Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell) in the movie, all amid a Melrose Place-esque apartment complex. Among the handful of lovesick couples, none captured the era better than coffee-house waitress Janet (Bridget Fonda) and hirsute rocker Cliff (Matt Dillon). Outfitted in a mix of casual, earthy-hued shirts and floral-print dresses offset by dark tights, the unrequited Janet contemplates better seducing Cliff by way of a breast augmentation. Meanwhile, her clueless, self-absorbed man could be found shilling his band, Citizen Dick, wearing his standard-issue get-up of plain T-shirts and tattered knee-length shorts. (Both, naturally, finished their looks with weather-appropriate leather jackets and black boots—hey, the Pacific Northwest is chilly.) And just as this brand of twentysomething angst has never quite gone out of style, so has this laid-back look endured. 1. 2. 4. 5. 8. 8 2 1 3 4 7 5 6 cover girl queen collection eyeshadow in black tie, $4. jacket by roxy, $90. 3. the fountainhead by ayn rand (new american libary), $8. dior addict high shine lip color in new look beige #220, $25. dress by alpinestars, $98. 6. jeans by matix, $60. 7. shoe by rocket dog, $70. dress by see by chloé, $435; belt by orciani, $325. 058 still lifes: chika kobari
