NYLON - February 2009 - (Page 74) something old, something new There is nothing worse than finding that perfect secondhand dress, only to realize it doesn’t fit. Deborah Brosenne, one of the founders of streetwear label Triple 5 Soul, was faced with this situation often enough to make it the basis for her latest venture. “The fit of most vintage clothing is a little off, so I began redesigning it,” says Brosenne, who first collected and sold vintage after moving to Los Angeles in 2001. “It all started when I discovered that old garments could be manipulated into fashion-forward styles.” The outcome of her experiment, TaxiCDC, which she created in 2008, is a collection of reworked dresses, blouses, and denim that marries a love of unique fabrics with an urban edge—and a heavy dose of sustainability. “I’ve always thought of the U.S. as the epitome of disposable culture, so I’m proud to alleviate some of that,” says Brosenne, who has plans to launch a bespoke service from her new Echo Park boutique. Now in its fourth season, the label has adopted a subtler approach, while staying true to its whimsical aesthetic. “I took a step away from the usual this season. Spring is about being understated so I went with simpler designs, and for the first time I’m using silk,” says Los Angeles–based designer Hannah Byun. The result is a lighter fabric adorned with embroidered zigzag details, dottrimmed hems, and block color patterns in pastel and rich olive hues that are perfect for jazzing up anyone’s feet.
