NYLON - March 2008 - (Page 134) WOODY’S NYMPHS WHEN IT COMES TO LEADING LADIES, HALLOWED DIRECTOR WOODY ALLEN HAS BEEN KNOWN TO PLAY FAVORITES. HERE, THREE OF HIS MUSES IN THEIR MOST MEMORABLE ROLES. DIANE KEATON IN ANNIE HALL Sigh, Diane Keaton is so cool. She’s dated a number of legendary men (including Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino) but never been married; she is an outspoken critic of plastic surgery, which seems unbelievable considering the fact that she is still, at 61, breathtaking (she bared all in 2003’s Something’s Gotta Give); she is a single mother of two adopted children; and, Mr. Blackwell be damned, she continues to wear all manner of red carpet don’ts with utter panache. Keaton is, much like her most beloved character Annie Hall, a true original. Hall, widely considered to be an idealized version of Keaton herself, was Allen’s notion of a ditz—a woman who was scattered but also deeply intelligent, cultured, and complex. Basically, a woman who Allen, and his character Alvy Singer, a comedian obsessed with his own mortality, would easily fall head over heels for. And it’s impossible to think of any other actress filling Hall’s very mannish shoes besides Keaton, whose acting Allen once described as a “nervous breakdown in slow motion.” Annie Hall (1977) earned Keaton an Academy Award, pushed Allen into new creative territory (the rom-com!), and produced some of the greatest one-liners (“masturbation is sex with someone I love”) ever. Love is too weak a word for what we feel for Keaton—we luuurve her, you know, loave her, luff her, two F’s.
