BY THE SEE DAYDREAMS ARE MADE OF CHLOÉ. FORTUNATELY, THEIR DIFFUSION LINE, SEE BY CHLOÉ, HELPS MAKE THOSE DREAMS A REALITY. PHOTOGRAPHED BY LOUISA BAILEY Flipping through Chloé (Assouline), a retrospective of the iconic French label, it’s hard to tell which images are from the 1960s, and which were taken just a few years ago: The subtle signs, such as the thickness of a model’s eyebrows, offer more clues than the clothes, because for the last half a century, Chloé has been the arbiter of elegant, bohemian style, and stayed true to the carefree aesthetic of its founder, Gaby Aghion. Chloé has been worn by glamorous, globe-trotting women such as Kirsten Dunst, Maria Callas, Brigitte Bardot, and Jackie Kennedy, and when the label launched See by Chloé in 2000, the diffusion line quickly became as in-demand as its predecessor. See possesses the same glamour and quirky details as Chloé’s main line; it changes subtly along with the trends, but at the core it remains the same, with an unfussy femininity rendered in bright swaths of color and soft prints. As devoted fan Ariell Ilunga (see next page) says: “Chloé is the woman I aspire to be, and See by Chloé is the woman that I am.” CLARA LEONARD cult of CHLOÉ HAS A RICH HISTORY THAT DATES BACK LONG BEFORE STELLA AND PHOEBE ARRIVED. 1952 Gaby Aghion, an Egyptian living in Paris, starts creating soft, body-conscious clothes that reflect her bohemian approach to life. 1956 Aghion and her business partner, Jacques Lenoir, debut their first collection at the famed Café de Flor, a meeting spot for artists. 1960s With Chloé, Aghion and Lenoir nurture a group of Left Bank-dwelling young designers, who help define Paris’s ready-towear movement, known as Le Style. 1966 A young man named Karl Lagerfeld becomes Chloé’s head designer. An early Chloé sketch for spring/summer 1969.
