NYLON - March 2008 - (Page 78) WHAT’S IN A NAME “We’re taking a huge risk,” admits designer Jeff Halmos who, along with fellow Trovata alum Sam Shipley, recently traded in sunny Southern California for NYC, where the pair inaugurated their own label, named Shipley & Halmos “after two very dashing gentleman,” Halmos jokes. In Shipley’s words, the line is about clothes that are “rugged and durable,” although the woven shirts with silk bows, draped trench coats, and high-waist shorts seem more appropriate for riding the Nantucket ferry than for hoisting and tacking on a sailboat. The designers have created both a men’s and women’s collection, focusing on topnotch fabrics and, for the men’s line, playful items like boxers, suspenders, and ties (hats and leather briefcases arrive for fall). And, though the pair is busy acclimating to their new city and building a business, they still have time for a little wistful California dreaming now and then. “I miss surfing,” says Shipley. “And fish tacos!” Halmos chimes in.
