PHOTOGRAPHED BY AUTUMN DE WILDE “Our first trip to New York was this big series of disasters,” says Laura Mulleavy, 27, one half of the high-end designer sister act, Rodarte, with Kate, 28. “We didn’t know anyone,” she continues, “Kate made these amazing paper dolls of the dresses we had designed but I don’t think anyone ever opened the packages we sent out. Then, a blizzard forced our flight to land in Boston so we had to take a four-hour train ride down to the city—the whole time lugging a huge box full of very expensive clothes.” Thankfully, it all ended well: A few days later, on the eve of fall 2005 Fashion Week, they were featured on the cover of the prestigious trade paper, Women’s Wear Daily. Obviously, for the fashion industry, Rodarte was love at first sight. The sisters’ 10-dress debut garnered international attention, but got its start in their native Aptos, California, a pastoral Santa Cruz County town surrounded by the mustard fields, apple orchards, and the epic redwoods that inspired their collection. “It’s a very strange landscape,” says Laura, “It’s almost too surreal, too
