The walled city of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico was originally conceived (more than 500 years ago) as a military stronghold, and today it is a vibrant area, steeped in history and perfectly preserved architecture, with houses, cafés, and stores painted in every shade of Skittle. Against such a vivid backdrop, the outfits of the locals appear somewhat muted. It’s rare to see anyone making a major personal statement in something like magenta hot pants—maybe because it’s daunting to compete with such scene-stealing buildings. But during Puerto Rico High Fashion Week, the young influencers—mainly new designers and art students—were making every effort.
